A Brief Review Domain Parking
Domain parking is basically the process of monetizing a domain that you are not currently using or developing. Many people buy domains with the idea of developing them in the future. Over the months though, you can find yourself with tens or more of domains, sat on the Registrars holding pages.
That's great for the registrars because they often pack those "parked" domains with advertisements, and each time a visitor clicks on an advertisement, the Registrar makes some money.
So rather than let your Registrar earn even more money from you, some people choose to allow specialist companies to have use of the domain. These companies then host your domain using special website templates filled with related advertisements. They then pay you a percentage of any click throughs. These companies offer what is called domain parking services.
There are now many of these parking services around, helping both professional domain buyers as well as people with just a few domains. Some do have a minimum domains number requirement though. But there are enough companies around that even if you only have a few domains that you want to park, they will take you on.
The alternative to domain parking is host the domain yourself and fill it with advertisements while you are waiting to develop it. While that may sound great, remember that you will then have to pay for hosting as well have a web page designed. You will also have to research what content is most relevant to put your advertisements on. It all rather defeats the object of just temporarily parking a domain while you concentrate on other sites.
Most domain parking companies work the same way. While you keep full ownership of your domain, you "point" (generally by changing the nameservers) it to your parking company's site. Each company has the own exact way of doing things, but generally they put an optimised landing page on your domain filled with appropriate advertisements. That's it. Nothing else to do. Any visitors to your domain will see advertisements related to your domain name's niche, and hopefully click on one of them.
Once you have found the domain parking company that you want to use (we have a growing list of domain parking reviews on this site), it generally takes no more than ten to fifteen minutes to sign up. You'll then want to take some time to thoroughly familiarise yourself with the various options that you might get. Most domain parking companies offer different templates and the option to set specific keywords for your domains.
Money isn't the only reason to park a domain. You'll discover by reading the domain parking reviews that this is also a way to start to develop more traffic to your domain. This makes it a good option to start developing backlinks to your domain prior to developing it.
Domain parking can be used on its own as a method of monetizing a domain name and generating revenue, however it can also be used as a temporary option whilst a domain name is being held for future sale or development. Rather than sit on the Registrars account, clearly recognised by the search engines as an undeveloped domain name, by parking your domain, with regularly updated content and loads of pages, this will allow for it to start to get indexed.
Domain parking is a growing trend, with companies expanding the range of options available. We will be exploring all the different options domain owners have in our series of domain parking reviews.
